WIP - Adult Male Crowned Fisher by Birvan WIP - Adult Male Crowned Fisher by Birvan
I can't believe it took me a year to complete this concept...

This is a specie I've been working for quite some time, called Crowned Fisher. They are named after the male's crown like crest and their feeding habits
Although they are known especially for their habit to skim the water surface in search for food and having small rounded teeth adapted to grab the slippery fish, they also eat crustaceans, small animals, ripe fruit... anything that is easy to swallow whole

Although the tiny arms are nearly useless in adulthood, they play an important role in locomotion when hatchlings. As they grow older the legs develop and they exchange the quadruped stance for a faster biped one, which is kept even after their wings grow large enough to be flight worthy
Unlike their smaller distant cousins that live on trees, the Crowned Fishers prefer open plains, beaches and flat clifftops, depending on the predators in the area

Because they are a relatively small species (the size of a medium dog) they nest in large flocks during breeding season, but they are rather solitary and nomadic during most of their lives
They only raise their hatchlings until they become fully bipedal. Then the chicks are left to fend off for themselves while the adults leave in search of better food sources

The crest is mainly used a rudder and sexual display between males. Female crests are smaller and also display the crown stripe pattern, but they're duller in color
In confrontations the males often target each others crests in an attempt to damage the rim and make the opponent less appealing to females. Though because they evolved such large crests and they avoid damaging their own, they often rear their heads and use their chest and feet to hurt the opponent. Only in desperation they'll try to bite the other
